Today we had a vocab quiz (make-ups next Wednesday in my office, room 2410 K). We then analyzed some Naturalism paintings (make sure you reflect on each painting and answer the reflection question on the last slide), and reviewed for the -Isms test on Monday. We also checked out Huck Finn books, so if you plan to buy, please have them in class on Monday!

Today we went over vocab lists 1-2 (quiz tomorrow!). We then had our Transcendentalism jigsaw. See slides 17, 19-20 of the Transcendentalism PP for the group assignment.
Today we finished the last bit of the Batman Returns excerpt and had a quick discussion. I then introduced Transcendentalism and the jigsaw assignment. You will read either Self-Reliance or Civil Disobedience, and answer the individual questions on slide 16 (these are due for the jigsaw on Thursday).
Today we shared our Poe Projects. We then started watching Batman Returns to analyze the film excerpts for Dark Romantic elements. Please see slide 18 of the Dark Romantics PP for the film reflection questions.
Today was work time for the Poe Project (see slides 15-17 for the pieces you will read, and for the project requirements). The readings can be found on ActivelyLearn (class code 6b2ba). We will have a gallery walk then whole class sharing of your specific story on Tuesday. Optional homework is vocab 2. There will be a vocab quiz on lists 1-2 on Friday.

Today we started our next unit, the -Isms Unit. We took some brief notes on Rationalists, and then took notes on Romanticism, then read and analyzed William Cullen Bryant's poem "Thanatopsis". See slides 10-16 for the background on the poem and the analysis questions. If you were absent, make sure you read the poem and that you can answer all the questions. See me for help/clarification. I also passed out an -Isms Cheat/Review Sheet to use as a way to prepare for the -Isms test on 9/26. Finally, we took notes on Dark Romanticism (slides 1-14 of the Dark Romantics PP for the notes). Today we finished the Common Assessment Day 2. Make-ups will happen next Wednesday in my office, room 2410K. Any time left in class was spent on the I Am Poem.
Today we did Day 1 of the District Common Assessment. If you were absent, please come in Wednesday morning (give yourself 30 minutes) to make up the work. We then wrote an I Am Poem. If you were absent, please write the poem.
Monday 9/12: Today we wrapped up our Puritan unit by critically reading Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. See the Sinners PP for the notes, the discussion questions, and the Four Square assignment. If you were absent, you need to critically read the sermon and do the Four Square assignment on slide 6 of the Sinners PP). Optional homework for everyone: vocab list 1.
Friday 9/9: Puritan Poetry Friday! We looked at the poetry of Bradstreet and Taylor. See slides 15-22 for the questions/assignments. We then read an articled called "Our Puritan Life", and discussed if America of 2016 is still a Puritan society. For Monday: please print the document/PDF called Sinners Excerpt under the Intro Unit PP. Thursday 9/8: Today we had a reading quiz on the Of Plymouth Plantation reading (make-ups in my office, 2410 K, on Wednesday morning). We then discussed Puritans and their lifestyle. Finally we took some notes on Puritans and their place in early America. Please see slides 2-14 of the Puritan PP for notes. For Monday: please print the document/PDF called Sinners Excerpt under the Intro Unit PP. Wednesday 9/7: Today we checked out textbooks. Any time left was to read Of Plymouth Plantation. This document can be found either on ActivelyLearn or linked above. You need to read this by tomorrow...there may be a reading quiz. Tuesday 9/6: Today we did a little timed writing assignment. If you were absent, please do the assignment on slides 2-4 of the Skills Assessment PP. We then talked about stereotypes and the role of Native Americans in American culture. Please see the Native Americans PP, slides 2-14 for the lesson and discussion questions (you do not need to make this up if you were absent). Friday 9/2: Today we took a pre-test. Make-ups will happen Tuesday after school or Wednesday before school. Please email me if you plan to make this up. Thursday 9/1: Today was all about getting back to school. We went over the syllabus (due Friday 9/9), tips for class (called Tips for Class 2016). We then did a brainstorming session with the following: "what does it mean to be an American", and "find a quote/song/lyric that you think best represents America"). These two are due tomorrow.
