Today we continued our minorities unit by starting with the Harlem Renaissance. We read Langston Hughes' "When the Negro was In Vogue", and Zora Neale Hurston's "How it Feels to be Colored Me". See slides 1-7 for the notes, slides 8-13 for the group assignments. If you were absent, please make sure you read both essays.

Today we peer edited Huck Finn rough drafts. The rest of the period was spent: working on your Huck Finn essay (due between 11/14-11/18), or working on the Minorities Socratic seminar (prep questions on slide 9). These prep questions are due at the start of class on Friday, 11/18. You only need to use evidence based answers for these questions. You can ignore the questions on slide 10-12, those will be done at a later date.
Socratic seminar questions: 1.What role has media played in progressing and encouraging minority groups in our history? 2.What is the single greatest impact a minority or minority group has brought to the United States? 3.How and why did industrialists help the minority groups? 4.To what extent does the government have a responsibility to protect the rights of minorities? Do they even have a responsibility to protect minorities? Explain. 5.To what extent have minorities achieved rights in America? 6.What minority group was most successful in achieving their goals or purpose? Explain. We watched the Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman film Far and Away. We are studying immigrants, Westward Expansion, role of women, and industrialism in turn of the century America. There will be a viewing guide that is due Thursday at the start of class.
Reminders for due dates: Huck Finn rough drafts are due by 10pm on Tuesday, 11/8. You need to bring a hard copy to class on Wednesday too. |
