Today I introduced book clubs (see the NEW Book Club tab under the American Literature tab). We got some notes about the book, I went over the weekly reading schedule (slide 6), weekly response log (slide 7), book club roles (slides 8-11, and find the worksheets under the Book Club tab), and then did an icebreaker focusing on identity (slides 13-19). Your homework for next Wednesday's book club is to read pages 3-72.
Book Club Job Sheets: Spring Essay information and outline template (due 5/8 with work time 5/4) Today we looked at music of Vietnam and war. We analyzed how music can be used to protest. Please see slides 1-19 for the songs, and the analysis questions for each song. Each person needs to complete the Music of Vietnam worksheet. If you were absent, you need to analyze the three songs using the worksheet. We then had a discussion about the power of music during protest.
Spring Essay information and outline template (due 5/8 with work time 5/4) Today we had work time for the creative project for our class assessment on the unit of protest (Civil Rights and Vietnam), see slide 13 for directions. These are due by Friday, 4/28. We also checked out The Glass Castle novels. If you were absent, please see Mrs. Kruper in the library to get the book.
Today we had our war literature jigsaw, and shared a summary and the quotes with groups. Your group task was to create a Four Square (slide 12). I then introduce the creative project for our class assessment on the unit of protest (Civil Rights and Vietnam), see slide 13 for directions. Make sure you bring in any supplies on Monday as you will have a work period. No homework over the weekend!
Today we read and analyzed Tim O'Brien's Ambush story (slides 8-11). You read the story individually, and then answered the questions on slides 10-11 as a table group. Today we started our war literature unit (as part of the protest unit). We read Randall Jarrell's "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner" (see slides 3 for the assignment, 4 for the poem, and 5 for the reflection). You will be turning in the reflection on slide 5 in the homework packet. I also assigned the war literature jigsaw (slide 6-7...prep work on slide 6 is due Friday). Prep work: summary of the reading, most important quote, views of war/soldiers/America? Today we wrote our Civil Rights in-class essay. Make-ups will be tomorrow in my office, room 2410K.
Today we read Alice Walker's "The Civil Rights Movement: What Good Was It?". You then had to answer "what good was the civil rights movement" using evidence from the essay and your other knowledge from the unit (slide 17). Don't forget: tomorrow is your Civil Rights Unit in-class essay (prompts and directions on slides 18-21).
So close to the freedom of break!! Today we worked on our civil rights collage (slide 16), or collecting evidence for the in-class essay test April 18th (slide 19-21). Don't forget to submit your Junior Project by 10pm tonight!!
