Today we looked at the idea of multiculturalism vs. the melting pot. We answered some group questions about the multiculturalism background article (slides 47-49), and then read a short story called "Mother Tongue" by Amy Tan (questions on slide 51). We then learned some South African slang as a fun wrap-up activity (slide 52). Don't forget to finish your The Glass Castle reading and job sheets for tomorrow.

Don't forget, for Monday you need to read: "How to Watch Your Brother Die", "Legitimization through Disaster: AIDS and the Gay Movement", and "The Evolution of Divorce", and be able to support, using evidence, the prompt on slide 25 (slides 23-25 have further information).
Today was a work period for the Spring Essay rough draft (due by 5/14 at 10pm, with a hard copy needed in class 5/15). Homework for Friday: read "What They Carried".

Today we had work time for feminism readings from the 1970s (see slides 14-21) for the directions. You need to read the Gloria Steinem article, then answer the questions. Do not forget to research one of the feminist icons on slide 21. This is all due at the start of class tomorrow (either printed or handwritten).
